August Newsletter

Terrific weather and intense competition were the highlights of Events 5 and 6 held on July 17th and18th at Hoodoo.  The course featured two Chicago Boxes, a long, fast slalom, crossovers at each end and very tight slow-speed turns.  On Saturday, top time was garnered by David Halladey in his 71 XP Honda CRX pocket rocket, followed closely by David Boyd driving James Hudson's 09 Corvette Z06.

On Sunday the course was run in the opposite direction.  Surprisingly, the change in direction resulted in quicker times.  Top time of the day went to Marvin Wodtli in his Corvette powered 2008 Solstice GXP.  The number two spot went to Aren Shank, driving a Chevy powered 1978 280Z.  Mazda Miata's were tearing up the track, with Steve Krygier's 09 taking 3rd fastest time, followed closely by Bill Ranidleman in his 06 MX-5 and Blake DeWit in his 93 Miata.  Below is Sean Glaab's  Trans Am blasting through a crossover.  Sean put on quite a show, his front wheel lifting off the ground when he applied the massive torque generated by his supercharged engine.

We had a good turn-out for both events, with 42 drivers on Saturday and 30 on Sunday.   The photo below is of the pits and staging area for the Saturday event.

Additional event photos can be found at the end of this newsletter.

Attention OSI fans!

Big changes are in store for the Oregon Shootout Invitational (OSI). Due to uncertain weather conditions at Hoodoo in October, the club is moving the event to July. The first July OSI will take place in July 2011. Invitations to participate will be based on the 2010 season championship standings for the participating clubs. Since there will be no OSI held this year as a result of this change, ACCO has decided to host a free event at Hoodoo this October 9th and 10th for anyone who wishes to participate. This event will go forward regardless of weather conditions. Sorry, no studded tires allowed!

ACCO will have two cars for the FlashBack Cruz car show in Drake Park in Bend on 7th. James Hudson and Curtis Hagner have volunteered to represent the club for this event.  If space is available, a small course will be set up for kids to run through, complete with timing gear.  Who knows, we may inspire some future autocross racers.  Thanks to James Hudson for this great idea.

ACCO's autocross events are open to the public. Cars of all types, from Vipers to Volkswagens, and drivers of all skill levels,
from novice to expert, are invited to participate.  Daily event entry fees are $15.00 for students with a current student I.D., $25.00 for ACCO members, and $30.00 for non-members.  Drivers may participate in one or both events per day as their schedule permits.
There is no charge for spectators.

Dry camping is available at Hoodoo as are restrooms and showers (bring quarters for the showers). Camping and hotels are available
at other nearby locations. Please visit the club's website (
http://www.autoxclub.org ) for details.  The mosquito activity has dropped way off, but there are still some of the pesky little critters to be found.  Be sure to stock up on mosquito repellent, just in case.

All drivers must have a valid driver's license or driver's permit which requires another licensed driver in the vehicle.
Minor drivers must be able to show that they have parental permission to operate the vehicle in the event.

Cars must pass a safety inspection and drivers must wear a Snell 95 or better helmet, enclosed shoes and must use seat belts. The club has loner helmets for drivers that do not have a helmet.

ACCO's Schedule for the remainder of 2010:

August 28-29, Event 7 & Event 8
September 11-12, Event 9 & Event 10
October 9-10 Free-for-all OSI Substitute Event
