2008 Navigation Rallye

Introduction
I am organizing a Spring 2008 Navigation Car Rallye that will be held on Sunday 27 April,
beginning about 9 am and ending about noon, with the awards being held at a restaurant while rallyists enjoy a drink and lunch.
Any type car/truck/van/jeep can participate, though sports cars and convertibles seem to offer the most fun!
There must be at least two people per vehicle, a driver and a navigator.
Description of a navigation car rallye
A navigation car rallye is straight-forward with no gimmicks (e.g. not a poker rallye, nor having to solve riddles, etc.).
It involves following a set of instructions that are completed in order, and will take you on a course that stays on paved roads and maintaining speeds within legal limits, beginning and finishing in Bend.
All participants follow the same course, leaving the start and checkpoints along the way at one minute intervals.
Manned checkpoints (except for the initial odometer checkpoint) are encountered along the course.
At each checkpoint your time to complete the rallye to that point will be noted, and your time for the next leg will begin.
Each leg is timed separately and time lost or gained on one leg cannot be made up on subsequent legs.
Generally, there are three legs, with the rallye taking about three hours to complete.
The car with the lowest total penalty time (e.g. total time either early or late on each of the legs) is the winner of the rallye.
Usually there is a maximum penalty on each leg (e.g. 15 minutes). There will be only one class: Seat of the Pants (SOP).
This is the novice class and the only equipment allowed is: speedometer, odometer, regular and stop watches, pencil, and paper.
No GPS, time/distance tables, calculators, slide rules, or other such equipment and instruments that would contribute to calculating speed, distance, and location are allowed.
Cost
The entry fee will be $25 per car, which will be used to cover the cost of setting up the course, materials, permits, a rallye dash-plaque for each vehicle,
awards for the top three finishers (for both driver and navigator), and a booby prize (for the driver and navigator with the highest total penalty time)!
Drinks and lunch at the restaurant at the end of the rallye will be at the participants' expense; other costs will be for your gas for approximately 100 miles of rallying.
Contact Information
Entries will be limited to 20 vehicles; if you wish to learn more, or know that you want to participate, please call me at 389-9933 or 788-1653, or email to: bokasand2001@yahoo.com
You will receive a registration form and a set of general instructions which provides details on how the rallye will be conducted (specific course instructions will not be given out until five minutes before you actually start the rallye).
Once reviewing the general instructions, and you decide to participate, you can return the registration form to me via email, or snail mail to 63304 Brightwater Dr., Bend 97701.
For participants there will be a pre-rallye get-together on the evening of Saturday 26 April to go over the general instructions, answer questions, pay your entry fee, and receive the location and time for the rallye start on Sunday morning.

I look forward to having you participate in this exciting event…

Bob Sanders
